I chose the website DeviantART.com for my ethnography, I was going to make account but my mother camera was not working. Deviant art is a website dedicated to the promotion of art by the artist, it also allows artists to sell their art.
First thing I notice is the annoying add screaming through my speakers, the only way to expierience the website without the those is to become a pro-memberwhich I’m assuming requires paying. The front page has a home button; next to it is an arrow pointing down with a drop down menu with all sorts of ways to navigate the website which I will talk about later. The main page by default shows the most popular art (all categories) in the last eight hours, but can be changed to newest art. There is an arrow with a scroll down panel shows you the shop. You can take the tour which I will now describe.
First part of the tour is a video that starts with a quote from Frank Zappa “With out deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.” The video explains how it connects artists from around the world and how fast the site is growing. Part two shows the user how to browse all the categories of art. The third part shows that the artist can create a portfolio in which the rest of the community may critique. Part four shows how the user can customize their profiles, use the journal, use the widget bar (which is a toolbar that the use can drag and drop any link the user may need to use on a regular) and all the customizable options that the user has in settings. The fifth part shows how users can interact with each other by using messages, chat rooms and by critiquing each others art. The final part of the tour shows that you can buy other artists art, their merchandise which they call “devWEAR” and sell your own art as prints.
The community seems very supportive of each others work; one of the more constructtive comments that i saw that went beyond just “that beautiful” or “nice work” was “Absolutely beautiful, I absolutely adore the use of texture in this piece, as well as the faded color scheme. The composition is beautiful, but there could have been something with a darker tone on the left (not too dark of course).
As I said before though, absolutely breathtaking”.Overall this is a wonderful website where artists and fans of art may get together, show off what they have done and collaborate further.
Postmodernism is Dead by Edward Docx
I went into this article with some skepticism, the subtitle of my blog is postmodernism at its finest. He explains fully what postmodernism is and its history. How it benifitted civil rights of all kinds by removing hierarchies of any kind. It is a rich article filled with details on how postmodernism affected art, history, philosophy and politics. He has an intrest personal and impersonal style which he flip flops between. The article is titled “postmodernism is dead” because he does explain how the postmodernists rattling the chains of the public is no longer shocking because the public has out grown its modernist ties so we are now in a new era which he calls the Age of Authenticism. Overall this is a well written, interesting article that makes some great points.
This article is a profile of Zen poet Gary Snyder, who lives in the foot hills of Sierra Nevada. He’s written 19 books about many subjects besides just poetry(watersheds, geology, logging, backpacking, Native American storytelling, sex, coyotes,Chinese landscape painting) and the last book he wants to write is going to be called “personal dharma memoir”, which will be about in the last twentieth century. What drew me to this article other than it being about zen Buddhism is when he mentioned that Snyder was at the first reading of “Howl” by Allen Ginsberg in 1956.I really enjoy Ginsberg’s poetry especially Howl; his reading of howl was a huge moment for the beat generation.Overall it was a good informative article.
You’ll rarely ever hear me publicly claim to be a artist because I find most artists narcissistic and annoying but I began drawing outside of school in fourth grade.I drew a picture of a sticker,it was a white Japanese race car with red stripes going down the hood. After that I began drawing and designing my own cars mostly side views, which lead into when I started working on my own r.c. cars. When I was about thirteen my eyes began catching up with up with my art,the side veiws of the cars didn’t cut it for me anymore.I attempted my do 3 dimensional views of cars but my drawing capabilities couldn’t catch up.For three years I had given on art, only the occasional doodle in the middle of class. At 16 I started drawing again, the first i drew was the face of a pierced and tattooed tribes men.At that period of time I drew alot of f aces and people including .I drew a couple of rappers(Lil’ Wayne,Existereo) and a close up of iron man.I also did alot of fish drawings at this time, mainly koi from top down veiws with lotuses.I also started shading a few pictures a rose,a mask from a star wars game and a hindu ohm symbol.Bits of my art started to become comic book like when I was 18.Also during this period of time I did a painting of great Cthulu’s head holding the moon.I took a 2 year break after that.In march I picked up the pen and paint brush again,I started with going back and outlining some of my older drawings:Moving on to dia de los Muertos(day of the dead)art which included sugar skulls paintings and tattoo clip art.Recently I have been working on a water color painting of a snake I titled “Supernal Serpent”.
Providence hiphop artist B. Dolan brings justice to the people with his new song “Film the Police” featuring Tokie Wright and Jasiri X produced by Buddy Peace as the add indicates. This add shows a white I phone at the center with youtube play button on the screen. Across the top of the I phone it says SFR which stands for strange famous, the record label that B. Dolan is signed to headed by Sage Fracis who is swearing Dolan in at the beginning of the song. Around the I phone is a gold circle, surrounding the gold circle is an grey outer ring with symmetrical black olive branches on either side of the the circle and B. Dolan in the center of the top in white. It has golden rays emanating from around the grey outer circle to complete the parody of a police officers badge.Under the badge there is a gold rectangle with the statement “Film the Police” in big black letters. This add is attempting to give the power back to the public in the wake of the police brutality found at the occupy protests. It calls for action on the part of the people during our technological revolution using our camera phones, video cameras,I pads and tablets to take videos of police brutality and post the video on youtube in order to expose the offending officers. In the song Dolan urges the video vigilantes to catch perpetrators name and badge number in order to help the case of the victims. For justice in court or by the acknowledgement and resulting punishment of the officer.Don’t mistake his paying homage to the group N.W.A.’s song F*** the Police(which calls for a violent revolution).B. Dolan wants a peaceful call to photographic call to arms.He states “Reach for a celly if you want to shoot a cop”.In the music video it shows many acts of police brutality at occupy and other incidents. He is selling #filmthepolice bandannas for protesters made of premium cotton (rather than synthetics) in order to better protect from tear gas.I support Strange Famous’ cause in attempting to bring a needed power back to the public, taking away from abusive authorities.Dolan calls his music “This is post-rap, psychedelic-hop horrorcore politics.”His basis is in slam, paired with heavy break neck beats and earth shaking deliveries through story telling, turns him into a undead hip hop titan.
“Cameras or guns, one of yall gonna shoot me to death, just know that” – Aesop Rock
In the essay “killing chickens” her descriptions are very vivid, such as how she describes the sun shining through the chicken coup when shes consoling itty bitty. Her emotional details of how she felt for the chickens and how the children felt, like when she said” I feel a crush of sadness, of defeat. We are exploding into smithereens on this pretty March day and we all know it.”The third thing I think she did we’ll is though it was an extremely trying emotional time for her she still managed to main well maintain the daily life with out her husband, which brings me to the main point of the essay. While everything is seems as though it is crumbling and changing she still maintains order in her daily life. She keeps moving though inside she wishes she could just curl up and cry.The essay I believe is a testament of the strength of the human spirit to move on even in worst of times. In conclusion she jumped around during the plot but not so much so that I couldn’t follow.Another thing she did very well was get me emotionally invested in her struggle to the point where I started to examine myself as I read this.
